Eudora Mail Import

Discussion of general (non platform specific) MailForge topics including feature requests

Once we get filters much more reliable, I'm going to look back through the outstanding issues and feature requests to see what seems to be the most important/requested. Importing is definitely up there at the top of what needs to be worked on.

I used quick. I have just tried the extended import. It finished without any errors, but took over 10 hours.

The folder sizes are the same as before.

It has still not imported sent messages that are not in the Out mailbox.

It has also imported messages from the Out mailbox that had been transferrred to other mailboxes after sending. Again, this looks like an issue with the mailbox not being compacted in Eudora before doing the import.

What is not good is that it seems not to have imported any attachmments at all this time. :-(

To clarify this, there are attachments in the Attachments folder, but there is no indication in the mailbox windows that any messages have attachments, and there are no links in the messages to attachment files. The messages include things like this:

Attachment converted: MacOSXS:Voice_Recording 23.wav (WAVE/ÇICÈ) (00879DB8)

Some messages have lost most of the end-of-line characters. The text just runs on continuously and wraps at the edge of the window.

Mike, do you want these things recorded in Mantis?

I hate to discourage anyone from logging things in Mantis but in this case I don't think it is necessary. To paraphrase, there are already issues that say "the current import sucks". :)

I used Eudora Mailbox Cleaner for all Imports from Eudora I had to do. It works, does what it says it does and does it well AND it is free.

What did you import *to* ? Also it doesn't run under Lion or later, it needs Rosetta.

It failed when trying to process my mail. There were some messages that it just couldn't handle. So I would dispute that it "works".

I imported all my mail (collected mail since ~1995, 100k+) into Gyazmail with its help and we are still using it to move customers away from Eudora to whatever mail client they end up using which is sometimes a lot, sometimes just a few mails (edit: we do Mac support and most of the people moved to Apple.mail).

Yes, the PPC/non Intel part is a pity but I'd guess the developer thinks there is no need for it anymore...

Well, I am talking about our experiences and for us, it worked every time we have used it up to now.

EMC also never worked for me - would just hang. Emailchemy did work (especially the latest version with improved status handling).

Hopefully this one will be on your list:

Sorry to keep bringing it up, but without this bug fix, MF is unusable for me. There is no point in my even trying it until I know the bug is fixed. And surely my university is not the only system out there that has this configuration.
Been using and still using Eudora continuously since ~1995. Waiting and seeing on MailForge.

mbierly wrote:Once again, I need some feedback from you guys. Since I don't have real world Eudora files I can't determine this myself.

How well does the import currently work for these categories? 0% = totally broken up to 100% = works perfectly

Mailboxes
Nicknames
Signatures
Stationary

I'd like to determine whether effort needs to be focused on this area and if is then how high a priority.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, there is a workaround for people who encounter problems:
Import something / close MF / ...

By my side all is aright: despite of trying importing by chunks of 2.000 mails.

Well: this only a workaround, until we have this problem fixed !!
